|Wind power plant Sternwald
The wind park Sternwald in the municipality Vorderweißenbach is located in the Mühlviertel in the North of Upper Austria, close to the Czech border. The first turbine was built in August 2003 and because of the excellent wind conditions another 6 turbines of the type Vestas V 90 followed in August 2005. The new turbines were grid connected in November 2005 and presently, the wind park has a total capacity of 14 MW.
With a height of 150 meters and a diameter of the rotor blades of 90 meters the annual energy production obtains about 31,000,000 kWh. This electricity yield provides approx. 9,000 homes with renewable energy which makes 10% of the homes in the region of the Mühlviertel.
The total investment costs of 16 mill. Euro were partly raised by the local citizens in form of a participation - 120 persons used this possibility - and partly by the WEB Windenergie AG. The feed-in tariff for the wind plant Sternwald is 7.8 cent which is the national tariff.
Before starting "Wind energy in Sternwald", the possibility of using wind energy was researched in cooperation with the Czech municipality Loucovice, a project supported by the European Union. The project was mainly initialised by Andreas Reichl, the head of the "Sternwind Errichtungs- und Betriebs-GmbH".
The wind power plant Sternwald shows a very high acceptance among the inhabitants. The result of a recent opinion poll indicates that 91% of the population are in favour of installing further turbines.
